Manna’s Market Makes a Difference in the Lives of Local Children

By Joyce Hummel

Joyce Hummel is a volunteer at The Market, and a Paraprofessional at the Woodland Elementary School (Lakewood School District). She has seen first hand how The Market has impacted the community.

Imagine being 8 years old and knowing that you are the “poor kid” of your 2nd grade class. You don’t have the cool clothes the other kids do and you are aware that you don’t get included in many of the things the other kids do. You don’t have very many friends and you don’t really care. You didn’t get any breakfast today and not much supper last night, just like many other nights this past month. Mom says she had to use the grocery money to pay other bills. Not very much fun being this kid, is it?

Now imagine that same child going to school with a confident smile on his face, being greeted by his peers and included in their games. He’s wearing some “cool” jeans and a t-shirt similar to every other boy in his class. He’s had a good breakfast and is ready to start the day. He may not be the best student in the class, but at least he feels accepted and his attitude is one of readiness to learn.

What makes the difference in this boy’s life and many others just like him? You do!

With your loving and generous gifts to Manna’s Market you have made the difference in many people’s lives. People who receive help from the Market are able to put the worry of how they are going to provide food for their families aside and concentrate on other important issues in their lives. The clothing bank has provided a place for many families to get their “school shopping” done. Warm coats and winter clothing are expensive and many would not have these things without your generous contributions.

As an employee of the local elementary school, I have witnessed the transformation of several children similar to the one mentioned above. I am acutely aware that if we did not have Manna’s Market available, the well being of many families in our community would be affected. Manna’s Market is meeting the needs of young and old alike.
